Hey Thriving Mamas! I often get asked about the journey of building Kido Chicago and the inspiration behind our inclusive kids boutique. Growing up in Chicago, I've experienced firsthand the importance of community, diversity, and creativity. Today, I'm excited to share my story with you – from my childhood in Chatham to creating a vibrant space in Hyde Park where families from all backgrounds can connect and thrive.
A Little Bit About Me
Growing up in Chicago provided me with a unique perspective on community, creativity, and the power of inclusivity. Born and raised in Chatham on the south side, my childhood was filled with memories of a close-knit neighborhood where everyone knew each other. I fondly remember roaming the streets freely, riding bikes, and understanding the dynamics of different households. It was a safe and nurturing environment that shaped my values and understanding of community.
Today, I reside in Hyde Park, a neighborhood that offers a different kind of richness. While I might not know my neighbors as intimately as I did in Chatham, the diversity brought by the university community is something I cherish deeply. My children are growing up with exposure to a myriad of cultures and perspectives, which I believe is invaluable.
The Birth of Kido
Kido was born out of necessity and a desire to provide something better for my own children and the community. In 2016, when my son was about eight months old, I struggled to find stylish and vibrant clothing options for boys. The market was saturated with drab colors and uninspiring designs. This frustration sparked the idea to create my own line of children’s clothing, focusing initially on cosmetics but eventually evolving into a movement.
Starting as an online kids boutique, it quickly became apparent that in-person connections were crucial. We began vending at local events and hosting story-times and family day parties, like the Baby Soul Jam, to foster a sense of community among families on the south side. These gatherings were not just about selling products; they were about creating a space where families could connect, share experiences, and build relationships.
Establishing a Physical Boutique
Two years into our journey, we opened our first storefront in the Roosevelt Collection Shops. This boutique space has become the heart of Kido, hosting a variety of classes, story-times, music events, and workshops. Our goal was to provide families on the south side with accessible and enriching activities without having to travel to other parts of the city. It was important for us to offer a boutique where families of color could feel a sense of belonging and community.
The Influence of Chicago
Chicago’s unique characteristics and challenges significantly influence my work at Kido. Despite its many wonderful aspects, Chicago remains a highly segregated city. Through Kido, we aim to bridge some of these divides by creating a boutique that welcomes families from all backgrounds. It is incredibly powerful to see multiracial families from places like Nepal, Colombia, and Uganda come together at Kido, sharing experiences and learning from each other.
Working with young children provides a unique opportunity to instill values of inclusivity and community from an early age. By providing a space where diverse families can unite, we are contributing to a more integrated and understanding future.
Giving Back to the Community
At the core of Kido’s mission is the desire to give back to the community. We aim to offer hope and positivity, encouraging parents to view the world through the bright and hopeful eyes of their children. The world can often seem pessimistic through an adult lens, but children have a unique ability to see things in a positive and inclusive light. At Kido, we strive to create a bright and colorful boutique space that fosters this perspective, helping parents and children alike to see the world as a place of potential and hope.
Looking Ahead
Our journey with Kido is far from over. We continue to expand our offerings and deepen our roots in the community. We are committed to creating products that reflect the diverse and vibrant spirit of Chicago, while also providing a boutique where families can come together, learn, and grow. The support and love from our community drive us to keep pushing forward, and we are excited about what the future holds for Kido.
Building Kido has been a labor of love, driven by a desire to provide better options for my children and my community. It is a reflection of the values and experiences I hold dear, shaped by my upbringing in Chicago. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to fostering a sense of community, inclusivity, and hope. Thank you for being a part of our journey.
